What is Dry Hire Bartending?
Dry hire bartending is a service model where the customer purchases all alcohol separately at retail prices, and the bartending service provides only labor, the bar itself, ice, mixers, fresh ingredients, garnishes, and professional bartending expertise. Because no alcohol is sold, served, furnished, or distributed by the bartending company, dry hire operates under different Massachusetts regulatory requirements than caterers licensed under M.G.L. Chapter 138 Section 12C.
The dry hire model is typically more affordable for hosts because retail alcohol pricing (what you pay at any Massachusetts liquor store) is significantly lower than the marked up pricing that traditional catering services charge. Hosts who already have a preferred liquor store, want to use specific brands, or want to bring leftover alcohol home after the event benefit most from dry hire bartending. BZ Tent Rentals operates exclusively as a dry hire service throughout Massachusetts.
Mobile Bar Rental and Dry Hire Bartending Service Hours and Pricing
BZ Tent Rentals offers three core service durations with transparent flat rate base pricing plus per guest charges. All pricing is calculated instantly via our online quote calculator, with no hidden fees.
3 to 4 Hour Service: $1,650 base + $10 per guest standard (or $14 per guest for heavy drinking events) + 20% gratuity + $200 travel fee (waived with bar tent add-on).
5 to 6 Hour Service: $2,500 base + $10 per guest standard (or $14 per guest for heavy drinking events) + 20% gratuity + $200 travel fee (waived with bar tent add-on).
7 to 8 Hour Service: $3,400 base + $10 per guest standard (or $14 per guest for heavy drinking events) + 20% gratuity + $200 travel fee (waived with bar tent add-on).
A 40 guest minimum applies to all bookings. A 2nd bartender is automatically added at 50 or more guests ($425 additional). A 3rd bartender and Bar Station Expansion are automatically added at 125 or more guests ($925 combined additional). Events with 200 or more guests require a custom quote (call 1-781-566-0328).
For instant pricing on your specific event, use the quote calculator on the Mobile Bar Package page.

- TIPS certified professional bartender(s) for the duration of your event
- Fresh pressed citrus juices (squeezed day of event, never bottled)

Every cocktail is built to higher standards than typical event bartending: real ingredients only, no artificial sour mix, no premade junk, and no shortcuts. We apply premium bartending techniques (including 50/50 saline solution balance on specific cocktails like the Daiquiri, Margarita, Whiskey Sour, and Old Fashioned) that are used at top tier craft cocktail bars including Death & Co, Eleven Madison Park, and Attaboy.
Mobile Bar vs Trailer Bar vs Traditional Caterer
If you're researching event bartending options in Massachusetts, here's how BZ Tent Rentals' Mobile Bar compares to other models:
Mobile Bar (BZ Style): A freestanding modular bar that breaks down for transport. Sets up at any venue, indoor or outdoor. No parking footprint required because there's no trailer or tow vehicle. Fits through standard 32 inch doorways. Best for hosts who want maximum venue flexibility.
Trailer Bar: A bar permanently built on a towed trailer. Looks impressive at outdoor events with driveway access. Cannot be brought inside any building, garage, or barn. Requires a parking spot adjacent to the event area, which excludes most indoor venues entirely. Best for outdoor only events at venues with ample parking.
Traditional Caterer: Full service catering company that bundles alcohol pricing with food and labor. Convenient if you want a single vendor for everything. Significantly more expensive because catering markup on alcohol typically runs 200 to 400 percent above retail pricing. Some caterers are licensed under M.G.L. Chapter 138 Section 12C and have stricter regulatory requirements (5 hour service cap, 48 hour police notification, wholesaler purchase mandate).
For most private events in Massachusetts, dry hire mobile bartending offers the best combination of premium quality, venue flexibility, and cost savings.

Why Choose BZ Tent Rentals for Your Mobile Bar and Bartending?
The Massachusetts event bartending market includes many options. Here's what specifically distinguishes the Mobile Bar from BZ Tent Rentals from competitors:
✓ 100% Premium Real Ingredients. Fresh pressed citrus (never bottled), housemade syrups (real cane sugar), real fruit and herb garnishes, premium spirits and mixers. Zero artificial sour mix, no premade lemon juice, no high-fructose corn syrup. If it's in your glass, we'd drink it ourselves.
✓ Indoor Capable. Our modular bar fits through standard 32 inch doorways. Sets up inside function halls, garages, barns, basements, breweries, and any covered venue. Trailer bars cannot do that.
✓ No Parking Issues. No tow vehicle, no trailer footprint, no driveway logistics required. We park a regular vehicle and walk the bar in section by section.
✓ Photogenic Design. Real reclaimed wood front, integrated stainless ice well, LED accent lighting. Looks beautiful from every angle (front, sides, back), not just the customer facing front. Perfect for wedding photos and social media content.
✓ Massachusetts Compliant. Fully insured dry hire bartending operation. Separate liquor liability coverage specifically for bartending services, in addition to general liability. Certificates of insurance available to venues upon request.
✓ Premium Bartending Techniques. Our bartenders apply professional craft cocktail techniques including 50/50 saline solution to specific cocktails for flavor balance (same technique used at Death & Co, Eleven Madison Park, and Attaboy). Each cocktail has a method badge (shaken, stirred, built, muddled, etc.) and detailed technique notes. Most mobile bars don't bother with this level of precision.
✓ 120+ Cocktail Library. Far more than the typical 6 to 10 cocktails most mobile bars offer. Every current IBA Official Cocktail plus retired classics plus modern favorites.
✓ Transparent Pricing. Instant online quote calculator with no hidden fees. What you see is what you pay (plus the alcohol you purchase at retail).

Massachusetts Dry Hire Bartending Law Compliance
BZ Tent Rentals operates as a dry hire bartending service in full compliance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 138. Under our dry hire model, the customer provides all alcohol (purchased separately at retail prices, which saves money compared to marked up catering pricing), and BZ provides only labor, bar equipment, mixers, garnishes, ice, and professional bartending service.
Because BZ does not sell, serve, furnish, or otherwise distribute alcoholic beverages, we are not subject to the requirements that apply to caterers licensed under M.G.L. Chapter 138 Section 12C. The Section 12C requirements include a 5 hour service cap, 48 hour police notification requirement, and a wholesaler purchase mandate. These do not apply to dry hire bartending services under Massachusetts law. This compliance position is fully documented in our Terms of Service and reviewed by Massachusetts counsel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is dry hire bartending?
Dry hire bartending is a service where the customer provides all alcohol for their event (purchased separately at retail prices) and the bartending service provides only labor, bar equipment, mixers, garnishes, ice, and bartending expertise. Because no alcohol is sold or distributed by the service provider, dry hire bartenders in Massachusetts operate under different regulatory requirements than caterers licensed under M.G.L. Chapter 138 Section 12C.
How much does a mobile bar cost in Massachusetts?
Mobile Bar Rental and Dry Hire Bartending packages by BZ Tent Rentals start at $1,650 base for 3 to 4 hour service, $2,500 for 5 to 6 hour service, and $3,400 for 7 to 8 hour service. All packages include a per guest charge ($10 standard or $14 for heavy drinking events) plus 20% gratuity and a $200 travel fee (waived when bundled with a bar tent rental). A 40 guest minimum applies to all bookings.
Do I need to provide alcohol for a dry hire bartender?
Yes. With BZ Tent Rentals' Mobile Bar dry hire service, you provide all alcohol (spirits, wine, beer, and sparkling). BZ provides bartender(s), the bar itself, ice, mixers, fresh pressed citrus, housemade syrups, garnishes, cocktail napkins, and cups. Our Cocktail Menu Builder generates a complete shopping list showing exactly what alcohol to purchase.
Can BZ Tent Rentals' Mobile Bar serve at indoor venues?
Yes. Our 8 foot bar is modular and fits through standard 32 inch doorways. We can set up in function halls, garages, barns, basements, breweries, or any indoor venue. This is a key advantage over trailer bars, which cannot be brought inside any building.
How far in advance should I book a mobile bar?
For weekend events during peak May through October season in Massachusetts, book at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. For weekday events or off season events, 2 to 3 weeks is usually sufficient. Wedding bookings frequently book 3 to 6 months ahead. To check availability for your specific date, use our quote calculator or contact us directly.
What is the difference between a mobile bar and a trailer bar?
A mobile bar like BZ's modular 8 foot bar is a freestanding bar that breaks down for transport and setup at any venue (indoor or outdoor). A trailer bar is permanently mounted on a towed trailer and can only be used where the trailer can be parked. Mobile bars work in any venue and require no parking footprint. Trailer bars cannot be brought inside buildings.
Do you bring your own bartender?
Yes. Every BZ Tent Rentals' Mobile Bar Package includes professional TIPS certified bartender(s) for the duration of your event. A second bartender is automatically added for events with 50 or more guests (additional $425). For events with 125 or more guests, a third bartender and Bar Station Expansion are automatically added (additional $925 combined).
Are BZ bartenders TIPS certified?
Yes. All BZ Tent Rentals' bartenders hold current TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures) On-Premise certification. TIPS is the most widely accepted alcohol service certification in the United States, covering responsible alcohol service, intervention strategies, and legal compliance for events.
What happens if it rains?
If your event is outdoors with no existing structure overhead, we recommend adding our 10x10 high peak frame tent for $500 (which waives the $200 travel fee). This is professional event equipment, not a pop up. If you have an existing tent, pavilion, garage, or other covered area, no rain coverage upgrade is needed.
Can I customize the cocktail menu?
Yes. Our standard package includes 3 signature cocktails selected from our 125+ cocktail library. You can add more cocktails for $75 each, add flavor variation packs for $135, add mocktails for $75, or commission a fully custom signature cocktail design via consultation.
Is there a minimum guest count?
Yes. BZ Tent Rentals' Mobile Bar Package has a 40 guest minimum on all bookings. Events with fewer than 40 guests don't justify the staffing and equipment overhead for a premium mobile bar setup.
How does pricing work for very large events?
For events with 200 or more guests, BZ requires a custom quote rather than instant calculator pricing. Larger events need additional staffing, specific equipment configurations, and venue specific planning. Contact us at 1-781-566-0328 or info@bztentrentals.com. Custom quotes are typically delivered within 24 to 48 hours.
Are gratuities included in the price?
Yes. The 20% gratuity is built into our package pricing automatically. There is no need to tip your bartender(s) separately at the event.
Does Does BZ Tent Rentals carry liquor liability insurance?
Yes. BZ Tent Rentals carries separate liquor liability insurance specifically for our dry hire bartending operations, in addition to general liability coverage. Certificates of insurance are available to venues upon request.
Not in Our Service Area?
Check our full delivery area here to see if BZ services your location. We are actively expanding coverage throughout Eastern Massachusetts including parts of MetroWest, Cape Cod, and the North Shore.
